I am writing to you from my studio/study/garage space when all is quiet here in South Austin. Fall seems to have officially arrived and the air feels fresh & cool. This is my favorite time of year…
Me & Miranda after a song healing circle
I have been quite busy with various projects these days (besides motherhood!) and would love to share with you some of what has been going on. Recently, one of my friends & fellow songwriter Miranda Dawn invited me to be a part of this great workshop that she created. I facilitated a song healing circle with her, and we connected with people who were grieving the loss of loved ones, which was the theme of this particular event. As part of the workshop, the participants were led to freeform write and together we wrote a song for each person using their words. The amount of love and support that was present was just incredible. I left the circle feeling uplifted and renewed. It was such an honor to be a part of this.
Miranda and I will be giving another workshop this Sunday in South Austin. If you happen to be in town, I encourage you to come to the event. The theme is Family Connection and Communication, but is really open for anything. There will be a new moon in the sky, and our focus will be on renewal, hope and new beginnings. Singing “Circle Game” with Shawnee
This past weekend I was a part of a great lineup for a Joni Mitchell Tribute Show. I sang the song “Circle Game” with Shawnee Kilgore. The event was a fundraiser for Kerry Polk, who is a fellow songwriter dealing with some health issues. It was such a beautiful show with so many amazing voices singing Joni’s songs.
As some of you know, I am also a painter. I have been teaching painting classes and have some really fun events coming up soon. I give lessons at schools, homes, breweries & more! If you would like to attend one of these classes, or want to host one of your own, please email me back to chat.
Check out my latest music video – we filmed this in South Padre Island, Texas (special thanks to Jason Fry & Jason Lively for the footage, Sherrie Gomez & Carolyn Reilley!) It was edited by Paul Curreri (who also produced the album, so it is very fitting…) I hope you like it!
In the last few weeks, I was able to write some more songs with three talented songwriters from Denmark – Claus, Kristian and Nana. We were able to create some beautiful songs and make lasting friendships. This is all happening with the program based here in Austin called The House of Songs. Jason and I are talking more and more about booking a tour to Denmark, The Netherlands, Belgium & Germany soon…maybe next summer! I will be recording a rough demo of one of these songs called “Fire” and will send that along to you soon so you can hear one of the new tunes…
A couple of days ago, NPR’s EarthSky featured one of my songs again! You can listen to the podcast here.
And if you haven’t heard yet, Austin 360 Radio is a new station based out of Austin, TX but can be listened to online from anywhere in the world!! They have been spinning “Honeybee” quite a lot:) If you would like to request one of my songs from Uncovering Stones, you can email firstname.lastname@example.org with your request. They still have our 07/14/11 interview & video up online if you’d like to check it out. Just visit www.Austin360Radio.com
Acoustic Sanctuary show / HAAM Benefit Day 2011 I have some fun shows coming up in the next few weeks. Tomorrow night I will be singing at a new listening space called The Acoustic Sanctuary. It is in downtown Austin, and is held in a church. I am sure this will be a lovely space to perform in and share a night of music. For info, please go here.
On Tuesday October 4th, we will have another HAAM Benefit Day. HAAM (Health Alliance for Austin Musicians) is what provides affordable health care for most of us working musicians here in Austin. It is an amazing organization and is powered by generous donations from many people and places. Most of the funds are raised annually on HAAM Benefit Day. To learn more about HAAM and to find out ways you can get involved, please visit www.myHAAM.org I will be performing that evening at Aquarelle in downtown Austin.
That’s all for now! Have a beautiful week…hope to see you someday soon!
Here is a picture of one of my latest paintings. I did this for my friends’ brand new baby Oliver! Congrats to Ben & Steph…
Today is the first day of our Kickstarter Campaign. We will try to raise the last bit of money we need to see this album project through to completion. If you would like to take a look, and check out the super cheesy video we made, just click here.
Lately, most of my time has been spent practicing the new songs with the players that will be on our next album. Things are sounding great! I can’t wait to see how it all comes together. We have got one last rehearsal tonight before recording begins…I will be leaving in a couple of days to tour with the talented Laura Marie from San Antonio, TX. Then I will be at the International Folk Alliance performing showcases in hotel rooms…it’ll be lots of fun! Then back to Austin to start recording with everybody!!
I encourage you to go check out the funny video, and if you would like to give a little money towards this next album, we thank you very much!
Have a beautiful day.
p.s. here is a new photo by rodney bursiel, a great folktographer!
